Costa Dorada Travel Guide
2026 Edition
Catalonia's golden-sand coast — 215km of flat, family-friendly beaches backed by Tarragona's 2,000-year-old Roman city, PortAventura theme park and the bird-filled Ebro Delta. Spain's best-value beach destination.
Costa Dorada — the Golden Coast, called Costa Daurada in Catalan — runs along the Tarragona province south of Barcelona. The name refers to the colour of its sand: pale gold, fine-grained and flat, stretching in long uninterrupted arcs between low headlands. This is the least dramatic coastline in Catalonia and arguably the most family-friendly in all of Spain. The water is calm, the beaches are wide, and the infrastructure for visitors is comprehensive.
But the costa is far more than its beaches. Tarragona is one of the most significant Roman cities in the western Mediterranean — the former capital of Hispania Tarraconensis has an amphitheatre built into the cliffside, a still-intact circus that hosted chariot races, a 1st-century aqueduct, and a medieval cathedral built over the former Roman forum. The whole complex is UNESCO-listed and can be explored in a full day from any resort. At the other extreme, PortAventura World — with PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and the Caribe Aquatic Park — is the largest theme park complex in Spain.
The southern end of the costa opens into the Ebro Delta — 320 square kilometres of rice paddies, lagoons and wetlands that support extraordinary birdlife including flamingos, herons, ibis and 300+ recorded species. Cambrils, the gastronomic capital of the costa, has six Michelin stars distributed across its restaurants and a seafood market that supplies some of the best fish cooking in Catalonia. Reus Airport puts the region within easy reach of most European cities.
