May, June and late September are the strongest months to walk Caminito del Rey – comfortable temperatures, low rainfall, and a much quieter trail than the July–August peak. July and August work if you take the first slot, but the heat in the gorge is real. This guide breaks down what each month is like, plus the best time of day and how the closures work.
For the rest of your trip, see our Málaga city guide.
- 01Best overall: May, June and late September – good weather, lower crowds, easier to book.
- 02Avoid July–August if you dislike heat – the gorge regularly exceeds 33°C and the limestone radiates it.
- 03The first entry slot of the day is always the least crowded, in any month.
- 04Open Tuesday to Sunday only; closed Mondays, plus 24, 25, 31 December and 1 January.
- 05Tickets sell out 4–8 weeks ahead in peak season, so book before you plan the rest of the trip.
Month by Month
The trail is open year-round bar fixed closures, but conditions shift a lot across the seasons. Spring dries out from a wet winter, summer is hot and very dry, and autumn rain returns through October.
| Month | Avg high | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| January | ~16–17°C | Wettest season, frequent rain |
| February | ~17–18°C | Still rainy, improving slowly |
| March | ~19–20°C | Rain easing, pleasant days |
| April | ~22–23°C | Some spring showers, good overall |
| May | ~25–26°C | Drying out, very comfortable |
| June | ~29–31°C | Very low rainfall, warm |
| July | ~33–34°C | Very dry, hottest period |
| August | ~33–34°C | Very dry, hottest period |
| September | ~28–30°C | Still warm, rain begins to return |
| October | ~23–26°C | Rain increases through the month |
| November | ~18–20°C | One of the wetter months |
| December | ~15–17°C | Cool and fairly wet |
The Best Months in Detail
May and June are the strongest all-round choice – temperatures between 25°C and 31°C, the lowest rainfall outside summer, and easier ticket availability than August, though June weekends still fill up. If you can only pick one, June gives the best balance of weather and availability.
Late September is the most underrated time: temperatures have dropped from the July–August peak but stay warm, crowds are noticeably lighter, and last-minute bookings become more realistic, though rain starts to return through October so earlier in the month is better. April is worth considering if you're flexible – comfortable days around 22–23°C, with the main risk being spring showers that can close the trail.
July and August
This is the most-booked period by volume but the hardest for walking. The limestone walls radiate heat, so the gorge feels significantly hotter than the ambient temperature, and arriving at midday in August is genuinely uncomfortable. The first slot of the day – usually around 08:00 – makes summer manageable.
November to February is the wet season: the trail stays open Tuesday to Sunday but rain is frequent, weather closures are more likely, and temperatures are cool. If you're visiting Málaga in winter and want to walk it, check conditions the day before and keep a backup plan.
Best Time of Day
The first entry slot is always the quietest, in any month – the trail fills from the south end as groups work through, so early starters have the dramatic hanging-bridge section largely to themselves. Midday, roughly 11:00 to 14:00, is consistently the busiest, and in summer it's also the hottest. Late-afternoon slots can feel cooler as the gorge walls throw shade, but they don't necessarily mean fewer people.
| Period | Crowd level | Booking lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Jul–Aug weekends | Very busy | 6–8 weeks ahead |
| Jul–Aug weekdays | Busy | 4–6 weeks ahead |
| May, Jun, Sep | Moderate | 2–4 weeks ahead |
| Apr, Oct | Quieter | 1–2 weeks ahead |
| Nov–Mar | Low | Often last-minute |
Closures and How to Plan
The trail opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays (with occasional exceptions for special dates), plus fixed annual closures on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. Management can also close, restrict or suspend visits for safety at any time – the official guidance specifically notes closures when winds are high along the hanging bridge, while light rain may still allow access, with the decision made on the day.
