Málaga is walkable – the historic centre, the Alcazaba and the port are all within 20 minutes on foot. But the hop-on hop-off bus solves one genuine problem: Gibralfaro Castle is a steep 30-minute climb from the Cathedral, and in July heat that's not nothing.
Mapping out the city? Our Málaga travel guide covers the rest.
The City Sightseeing circuit covers every major sight with audio commentary in eight languages, and it runs often enough that you can leave the bus, explore, and catch the next one without planning around timetables.
- 01Buy online to save versus the driver price and skip the queue at stop 1.
- 02The Essential ticket includes the bus plus a 50-minute harbour boat tour – the right call for most visitors.
- 03Gibralfaro is the stop that earns the ticket: a steep, unsheltered climb on foot, painless by bus.
- 0410 stops cover all the major sights, and the full circuit without getting off takes about 1h 20min.
- 05It's most worth it on a first visit; with two days and good legs, you may only need the bus for Gibralfaro.
Tickets and What Each Includes
City Sightseeing Málaga sells two main ticket types, both covering the bus circuit and audio guide.
| Ticket | Price (online) | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Essential 24h | From ~€18 | Bus circuit + harbour boat tour |
| Essential 48h | From ~€23 | Bus circuit + harbour boat tour |
| Iconic | From ~€24 | Bus + boat + MIMMA + Carmen Thyssen Museum |
The Essential ticket is right for most visitors – the harbour boat tour is a genuine extra, 50 minutes on the water with views back to the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro you don't get from land. The Iconic ticket makes sense only if you'd visit the Carmen Thyssen independently anyway, as its admission alone is around €10.
Either way, buy online before you reach the stop – it's slightly cheaper than the driver price and skips the queue at stop 1 in peak season.
The Stops Worth Leaving the Bus For
The full circuit takes around 1 hour 20 minutes without getting off, but most people leave the bus at two or three stops and spend a half-day on the tour.
| Stop | What's there | Leave the bus? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 – Paseo del Parque | Main stop, port, Roman Theatre | Start here |
| 2 – Alcazaba | Moorish fortress, Cathedral nearby | Yes – 45–60 min |
| 3 – Gibralfaro Castle | Castle + best view in the city | Yes – the highlight |
| 4 – Alcazabilla | Picasso Museum, old town | Yes for Picasso fans |
| 6 – Soho | Street art, Pompidou Centre | Yes for Pompidou |
| 7 – Port | Muelle Uno shops, restaurants | Good lunch stop |
| 8 – La Malagueta | City beach, promenade | Yes for a swim |
Stop 3, Gibralfaro Castle, is the one that earns the ticket. The castle sits 130 metres above the city and the walk up from the Alcazaba is steep and unsheltered, so in summer the sensible approach is to take the bus up and walk down to stop 2.
Stop 2, the Alcazaba, is the other essential, taking 45 minutes to an hour to explore properly, with the route back down past the Roman Theatre tying everything together. The boat tour included with the Essential ticket departs from the port at set times – confirm them at stop 1 or in the app on the day.
Practical Tips
The bus runs every 20–30 minutes in season, with no fixed stop-by-stop timetable, so check the City Sightseeing app or the board at stop 1 for the next departure; frequency drops from November to March. Ride the upper deck – it's open-air with unobstructed views and the same commentary as below – and early morning is quietest with the best light.
The open top gets hot by mid-morning in summer, so a hat and sunscreen aren't optional on the upper deck in July and August. The app shows live bus locations, which helps when you're waiting and unsure which loop the next bus is on.
Is It Worth It?
A First-Visit Tool
For a first visit, the bus is worth it – the 24h ticket covers more ground than you'll realistically walk, includes the boat tour, and solves the Gibralfaro climb in one go. For a second visit or a focused art-and-tapas day in the old town, it adds less, and the things to do guide covers the walking circuit in detail.
