Puerto Marina sits at the eastern end of the Benalmádena coast, and every morning catamarans and motor boats pull away from the quayside heading south-west into the Strait of Gibraltar – the richest dolphin corridor in the western Mediterranean. A standard trip lasts two hours, costs from €20 per adult and operators claim a 95%+ sighting rate. That figure holds up: this stretch of coast supports large resident populations of common and bottlenose dolphins year-round, with striped dolphins joining them regularly and fin whales or sperm whales occasionally passing through deeper water.

Quick Takeaways
  1. 01Departs from Puerto Marina (the big luxury marina) – not the fishing port. This is the most common mistake people make on the morning of their trip.
  2. 02Trips run approximately 2 hours. Morning departures at 10:00–11:00 give calmer seas and statistically higher sighting rates.
  3. 03Prices start at around €20–25 per adult, €15 per child (ages 3–12), under 3 free. Some tours include drinks.
  4. 04Common dolphin, bottlenose and striped dolphin are spotted regularly. Fin whales and sperm whales are occasional in deeper water.
  5. 05If you want drinks included and a more relaxed pace, book the sailing and dolphin combo – it is the better option for couples.
  6. 06The Cercanías C1 train drops you at Benalmádena Costa station, 5 minutes' walk from the marina. No car needed.

Which Tour to Book

There are two main options departing from Puerto Marina: a straight dolphin watching cruise on a motor boat or catamaran, and a sailing and dolphin tour that includes drinks and runs at a slower pace.

TourDurationPrice (adult)Best For
Dolphin Watching Cruise~2 hoursFrom €20–25Families, first-timers, everyone
Sailing & Dolphin Tour with Drinks~2–2.5 hoursFrom €25–30Couples, relaxed half-day out

The dolphin watching cruise covers more water faster, which can help on mornings when dolphins are further out. The sailing tour trades speed for atmosphere – drinks included, less engine noise, better for people who want to actually enjoy the sea rather than sprint across it.

No Dolphin Sighting? Some Tours Offer a Partial Refund

A handful of operators offer a partial refund if no dolphins are spotted. Check the specific tour's terms before booking – not all operators include this guarantee, but it is worth confirming if sighting assurance matters to you.

What You'll See

The waters off Benalmádena are on the main route that dolphins use to move between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Three species appear regularly:

  • Common dolphin – the most frequently spotted, often in pods of 20–50
  • Bottlenose dolphin – larger, less numerous, known to approach boats
  • Striped dolphin – sleeker and faster, seen year-round but especially in warmer months

In deeper water further offshore, fin whales and sperm whales pass through seasonally. Skippers will radio other boats and position accordingly – sightings are less certain but they do happen.

Take note
Morning departures between 10:00 and 11:00 consistently produce better sightings. The sea is calmer, visibility is cleaner and dolphin activity tends to be higher before the heat of the day. If you can only pick one departure time, go morning.

Morning vs Afternoon Tours

Morning (10:00–11:00)Afternoon / Sunset
Sea conditionsCalmer – better for prone-to-nausea passengersCan be choppier, especially July–August
Sighting probabilityHigherSlightly lower
Light for photosGood, slightly harshWarm golden light for sunset tours
Best forFamilies, children, first-timersCouples, those who want the atmosphere

Afternoon and sunset sailing and dolphin combos are genuinely popular for couples – the lower sun, the drinks, the slower pace. Just know that sighting probability is marginally lower than the morning run.

Getting to Puerto Marina

Do not go to the fishing port. Puerto Marina – where the tours depart – is the large luxury marina on the eastern edge of the coast strip. It has floating restaurants, bars and Sea Life Aquarium. It is not the small fishing harbour further along the seafront. This confusion causes people to miss their boat.

By train: Cercanías C1 from Málaga Centro-Alameda or Málaga María Zambrano. Get off at Benalmádena Costa. The marina is a 5-minute walk. Single fare is €2.60 from Málaga city.

By car: Free parking is available around Puerto Marina. Allow extra time in July and August when the car parks fill up by mid-morning.

What to Bring

The boat is out at sea for two hours, which means wind, sun and spray that you do not get on the beach. Come prepared:

  • Sunscreen – the deck has no shade and the water reflects UV
  • A layer – even in summer, the sea breeze at speed is cooler than you expect
  • Motion sickness tablets – take them 30–45 minutes before boarding if you have any history of seasickness; open water is different from flat-calm conditions
  • Camera or phone in a waterproof case – spray happens

Bags are small, boats are crowded. Leave the beach bag at the hotel and travel light.

Refreshments On Board

The dolphin watching cruise is typically self-catering – bring your own water. The sailing and dolphin tour with drinks includes beverages as part of the price. Check your specific booking confirmation to know what is included.
Plan Your Visit
Choose this if...
Take the morning departure (10:00–11:00) for the calmest seas and highest sighting rates. Book online in advance, especially July and August when boats fill days ahead. If you want drinks included and a more relaxed pace, upgrade to the Sailing & Dolphin Tour. Weekdays in May, June or September give you smaller groups and better photo opportunities.
Avoid this if...
Do not turn up at the fishing port – the tours leave from Puerto Marina, not the fishing harbour. Skip the afternoon trip if you are prone to seasickness; morning seas are consistently calmer. Do not skip motion sickness tablets if you have any history of nausea on water. Do not leave booking to the last minute in high summer – popular tours sell out days ahead.

Dolphin watching is one of the better-value activities along this stretch of coast. For everything else based here, see the Benalmádena things to do guide for a full rundown with prices and honest assessments.
