Benalmádena Pueblo sits at around 200 metres above sea level, about 6 km from the coast. It is the original settlement – the village that predates the resort town below by centuries. The whitewashed streets, the 17th-century church, the panoramic views over the Mediterranean and two of the best restaurants in the whole municipality are all up here.

Most visitors stay on the coast and never make the drive. The ones who do usually wish they had come sooner.

Getting to Benalmádena Pueblo

By car: The most practical option. Drive up via the main road from Benalmádena Costa – 6–7 km, around 9–20 minutes depending on traffic. Free parking is confirmed at Parking Centro Pueblo, which has a large capacity. It is the easiest free parking in Benalmádena.

By taxi: Around 9–20 minutes from the coast, fare typically €13–€16 from the Colomares and Pueblo area. Straightforward to arrange from the marina or main Costa strip.

By bus: The M-112 local bus serves the route between the coast and the Pueblo. Timetables change seasonally – confirm current times locally before relying on this option.

From Málaga: Around 30–40 minutes by car via the A-7. Worth combining with a morning on the coast – drive up to the Pueblo after lunch when the coastal heat peaks.

What to See in Benalmádena Pueblo

Plaza de España and the Village Streets

Plaza de España is the central square and the best starting point for any visit. Whitewashed buildings, terracotta pots, a handful of bars and restaurants with outdoor tables. From here Calle Santo Domingo leads toward the church and the main viewpoint area.

The streets are narrow and largely flat within the village core. Allow 30–45 minutes to walk the main lanes before heading to the specific attractions.

Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Guzmán

Free exterior · 17th century · Plaza Santo Domingo

The oldest church in Benalmádena, built in the 17th century and located at Plaza Santo Domingo. The exterior is free to visit. The terrace and surrounding area offer clear views over the coast below – one of the better free viewpoints in the Pueblo.

Interior access was not confirmed from current verified sources – check locally on arrival.

Viewpoints

The Pueblo itself functions as a free viewpoint zone. Several spots offer panoramic views over the Mediterranean:

  • Church terrace at Plaza Santo Domingo – clear coastal views, free
  • Mirador de Muro – named viewpoint referenced in current travel sources
  • Streets around Calle Santo Domingo – elevated views between buildings

A swing viewpoint (locally referred to as Mirador de Columpio) appears in visitor photos and social posts but could not be verified with an official location from current sources – ask locally if you want to find it.

Archaeological Museum

Free entry · Avenida Juan Luis Peralta 49

A small archaeological museum in the Pueblo with local finds from the area. Entry is reported as free. Current 2026 opening hours were not verified from an official source – confirm locally before making it a fixed part of your plan.

Colomares Castle

A mosaic-covered monument to Christopher Columbus built between 1987 and 1994 by local doctor Esteban Martín Martín. Entry €3 adults, €2 children and pensioners. Contains the world's smallest church at 1.96 m², officially confirmed by Guinness World Records. Closed every Monday.

Monowa Butterfly Garden

Open daily · 10:00–18:00 · C. Muérdago s/n

Formerly known as Mariposario de Benalmádena, now operating as Monowa Butterfly Garden and marketing itself as Europe's largest butterfly park. A tropical butterfly house with 1,500–2,000 butterflies, live emergence displays and a greenhouse-style indoor garden.

Where to Eat in Benalmádena Pueblo

The Pueblo has the best restaurants in all of Benalmádena – better than anything on the Costa strip at equivalent price points.

La Mar Chica – tasting menu format, around 12 covers, the most serious fine dining in Benalmádena. Book well in advance, especially for weekends and summer evenings.

La Niña – Andalusian cuisine with a terrace on Plaza de España. The most central and atmospheric option for a casual lunch or tapas. Mid-range pricing.

El Muro – mixed Spanish and continental menu with views. Good for a relaxed lunch.

La Perla – Mediterranean and Spanish, scenic village setting, consistently recommended in current travel listings.

La Pala D'Oro – Italian option in the village.

For tapas specifically: La Niña, Tapería de Benalmádena and La Cepa are the clearest current options.

For coffee and views: Pan Deluxe is described as a bakery and café with terrace views. La Cúpula appears in current listings as a drinks spot for sunset.

Take note
Eat in the Pueblo rather than driving back down to the coast for lunch. Prices are competitive, the setting is better and the restaurants are more memorable than anything on the tourist strip. La Niña on Plaza de España is the easiest choice for a walk-in lunch.

Best Time to Visit

Morning is the best time for the Pueblo. The streets are quieter before tour groups arrive, the light is better for photography and the temperature is more comfortable than the afternoon in summer.

Late afternoon works well for the viewpoints and sunset drinks at La Cúpula or similar terrace bars.

April to June and September to October are the best months overall. Comfortable temperatures, good light and fewer crowds than August.

August brings the most visitors to the Pueblo, particularly tour groups at Colomares Castle and the Stupa. Arrive before 10:00 to beat the groups.

Is Benalmádena Pueblo Worth Visiting?

Yes – it is the most overlooked part of Benalmádena and arguably the most interesting. The combination of Colomares Castle, the Stupa, the butterfly garden, free viewpoints and the best restaurants in the municipality makes it a genuinely different experience from the beach strip below.

It works best as part of a broader Benalmádena visit rather than a standalone day trip from Málaga – though as a half-day add-on from the city it is perfectly manageable.

Plan Your Pueblo Visit
Choose this if...
Park free at Parking Centro Pueblo and walk from there. Start at 10:00 when Colomares Castle opens – combine with the Stupa and Butterfly Garden in one morning. Eat lunch at La Niña on Plaza de España before driving back down. Go on a weekday morning to avoid tour groups at the castle and Stupa. Book La Mar Chica well in advance for a fine dining dinner in the village.
Avoid this if...
Do not skip the Pueblo because it looks like a detour – it has the best restaurants and most interesting monuments in Benalmádena. Do not arrive at Colomares Castle on a Monday – it is closed all day every week. Do not rely on the archaeological museum being open without confirming hours locally first. Do not go in peak August midday – the narrow streets get hot and crowded with tour groups by 11:00.
