Estepona sits at the western end of the Costa del Sol: 25 minutes from Gibraltar by car, closer to the Morocco ferry at Tarifa than any other major resort, and 45 minutes from Ronda through the Sierra Bermeja. Malaga Airport is about 75 minutes away – a direct transfer from Malaga Airport to Estepona gets you here without a car. Six day trips, all under two hours.
- 01Gibraltar is 25 min by car – closer from Estepona than from any other major resort on the coast
- 02Morocco: direct bus Estepona → Tarifa (1h 20min) + 35min ferry. Back by 8pm if you take the early bus.
- 03Ronda is a car trip – 45 min via MA-8300 through Sierra Bermeja. No practical direct bus.
- 04Manilva & Casares are 15 min away by car – the most overlooked half-day on the western Costa del Sol
- 05For Granada and Seville, Malaga is a better base – both are 2h+ from Estepona
Gibraltar
Gibraltar is the easiest big day trip from Estepona – about 30km and 25 minutes by road, closer than from Marbella (45 min) or Malaga (over an hour). Drive the AP-7 to La Línea de la Concepción, park on the Spanish side and walk across the border; the Europort car park is an 8-minute walk from the crossing. By bus, direct Avanza/ALSA services to La Línea run about 45 minutes for €3–5.

The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is the reason to come: Barbary macaques, views across the Strait to Morocco, St Michael's Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels. Allow 4–5 hours, and do not drive into Gibraltar itself – the streets are narrow and the car queue runs 45 minutes each way. Full logistics are in the complete Gibraltar day trip guide.
Morocco via Tarifa
Most visitors assume Morocco means leaving from Malaga or Marbella, but Tarifa – the ferry port – is only 75km and about 55 minutes from Estepona, far closer than from Malaga. The direct Avanza bus runs 4–5 times daily (1h 10–1h 30min, €6–13) and stops in Tarifa town centre, a 15–20 minute walk or €5–7 taxi from the port.

FRS and Baleària run the crossing: 35 minutes to Tangier Med or 60 minutes to Tanger Ville. Breakfast in Spain, lunch in Africa and back for dinner on the coast is genuinely achievable from Estepona. Book the Tarifa bus at least a day ahead in peak season and take the faster Tangier Med crossing; the full itinerary is in the Morocco day trip guide.

Ronda
Ronda is 60km from Estepona through the Sierra Bermeja – one of the finest mountain drives in Andalusia. The A-397 from San Pedro de Alcántara (15 minutes east) is the faster, better-maintained route at about 45 minutes; the inland MA-8300 via Casares takes 10 minutes longer but runs through cork-oak forest and mountain villages.

There is no practical direct bus – the connection needs a change in Marbella or San Pedro and runs about 3h 30min each way, so this is a car trip. By car it is the best full-day inland trip from the western coast, and the approach from Estepona is arguably more scenic than from Malaga or Marbella. See the complete Ronda day trip guide.
Manilva and Casares
Manilva and Casares are the two most overlooked destinations on the whole Costa del Sol, and from Estepona they are 15 minutes by car. Manilva has Moscatel vineyards worked since Roman times, the Baños de la Hedionda sulphur baths, and the marina at Puerto de la Duquesa. Casares stacks whitewashed houses up a 435-metre clifftop with views to Gibraltar and Morocco.

Take the MA-8401 to Casares first for the clearest morning light on the white walls, then drop down to Manilva for the Roman baths and a Duquesa lunch. Everything is free except the vineyard tour, and from Estepona it works comfortably as a half day. The full itinerary is in the Manilva and Casares guide.
Seville
Seville is 210km from Estepona – about 2 hours by car via the A-375 or AP-4, or 2h 30min on the direct Avanza/ALSA bus. It is a long day, but the Cathedral and Giralda, the Real Alcázar and a Triana tapas evening add up to one of the finest city experiences in Spain.

Book the Real Alcázar in advance at alcazarsevilla.org – it sells out in peak season – before you fix the rest of the day. The complete Seville day trip guide covers the Alcázar, Cathedral and Barrio Santa Cruz.
Granada
Granada is 220km from Estepona – about 2h 15min by car via the A-92 through Antequera, or 3+ hours by bus with a likely change. It is the longest trip here and the one needing the most planning: Alhambra tickets sell out weeks ahead. Leave by 7am to reach the Alhambra by around 9:15am with time for the Albaicín afterwards.

Book Alhambra tickets at tickets.alhambra-patronato.es the moment you have your dates – 3–4 weeks ahead in peak season, longer for July and August. Without a car or tickets, take a guided tour with Estepona pickup. The Alhambra day trip guide covers Nasrid Palaces entry strategy.
Which Trips Work Best from Estepona
Estepona's advantage is its western position: Gibraltar, Morocco, Ronda, Manilva and Casares are all closer from here than from Marbella or Malaga. The trade-off is the far side of Andalusia – for Granada and Seville the drive is long enough that Malaga makes the better base.
| Destination | By car | By bus/ferry | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gibraltar | ~25 min | Bus ~45 min | Closest major trip from any resort |
| Morocco (Tarifa) | ~55 min | Bus 1h 20min + ferry 35min | Best departure point on the coast |
| Ronda | ~45 min | Bus ~3h 30min (change) | Car strongly recommended |
| Manilva & Casares | ~15 min | Bus limited | Zero crowds, free entry |
| Seville | ~2h | Bus ~2h 30min | Capital of Andalusia |
| Granada | ~2h 15min | Bus ~3h | Alhambra – book tickets first |
The one thing to sort before you travel is tickets. The Alhambra and Seville's Real Alcázar both sell out weeks ahead in spring and summer, and there are none at the gate. Book those two the moment your dates are fixed – every other trip here can be decided on the day.
