La Cala de Mijas sits 30–35 km west of Málaga Airport on the A-7 coastal road, about 30 minutes, with no toll – the first AP-7 plaza at Calahonda is further west than you are going. It is a compact beach village where everything is within walking distance of the promenade once you arrive.
Getting there is the part that needs deciding, because there is no direct public bus from the airport. What La Cala does have is unusual for a village this size: a published fixed taxi fare of around €47 on the weekday daytime tariff, so you can agree the number before you set off rather than watch a meter.
What are the options, and what do they cost?

The gap between the taxi and a pre-booked car is small here – single-digit euros at the bottom of the transfer range. That is unusual, and it means the decision is about luggage, arrival time and whether you want the price settled in advance, not about saving money.
How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to La Cala de Mijas?
La Cala appears as a distinct destination on the fixed-price list carried in every licensed taxi and posted at the airport rank – one of the few smaller Costa del Sol villages that does. The weekday daytime figure is around €47.
Two things worth being precise about, because guides to this route get both wrong.
- No airport supplement is added. Málaga's €6.49 supplement applies to journeys to the airport, not journeys leaving it. Airport-origin trips run on their own higher bands, already inside the quoted fare. An earlier version of this page added €5.50 and quoted an "all-in" €52–€53 – that was a mechanism that does not exist on this journey.
- No toll is added either. The A-7 coastal road is free for this whole stretch.
The night, weekend and public-holiday band is higher, but the sources disagree on how much: listings put it somewhere between about €54.50 and €59, and no municipal document settles it. Treat the daytime €47 as the reliable number and the night fare as "expect somewhere in the mid-to-high fifties".
Where La Cala sits on the coast is part of why the fare is what it is. It lies between Fuengirola and Marbella, roughly two-thirds of the way along the developed strip, so it is a longer run than Benalmádena or Torremolinos but well short of Estepona. The A-7 carries you the whole way without ever needing the toll motorway.
Getting there by public transport: two legs, no direct bus
There is no direct airport bus to La Cala de Mijas. The public route is a train and then a local bus, and it works if you have time and light bags.
Take the Cercanías C1 from the platform beneath Terminal 3 to Fuengirola, the end of the line – about 34 minutes, running every 20 to 30 minutes, at the low single-figure zone fare. Then the M-220 local bus from Fuengirola to La Cala, roughly 20 to 30 minutes for a couple of euros.
Total is around 1 hour 20 minutes against 30 minutes by road, for something like €4 against €47. That is a real saving and a real cost in time.
It is also two sets of luggage handling and a connection that has to work. The C1 is frequent and reliable enough that the train leg is rarely the problem; the bus at the far end is where a delayed flight starts to hurt, because the gap between services stretches as the evening goes on.
Flybus is sometimes listed as a direct shuttle to La Cala at around €20 to €23 per person, which would suit a solo traveller if the timing works. As with Benalmádena, the operator's own published routes do not clearly confirm it, so verify at the point of booking rather than planning around it.
Should you hire a car instead?
La Cala is one of the easiest coastal villages on this stretch for a self-drive arrival. The A-7 runs straight to it with no toll, and there is ample beachfront parking, both free and metered – which is not something you can say about most of this coast in August.
The contrast worth knowing is with the hill village that shares the name. Mijas Pueblo is a different place entirely – whitewashed lanes several hundred metres up, laid out long before cars, where parking is genuinely difficult. If your trip takes in both, the car is a help down at the coast and a complication up the hill.

Should you pre-book a private transfer?
This is a closer call than on most routes, and the reason is the fixed fare. A transfer runs about €50 to €70 against a taxi at roughly €47 – at the bottom of that range the difference is a few euros, at the top it is meaningful.
What the booking buys is the removal of the variables rather than a saving. A driver is in arrivals with a board whatever time you land, the price is agreed before you fly, and the drop-off is an address rather than a village. On a 30-minute run to a walkable village, that matters most when the arrival itself is awkward – a late landing, small children, or more bags than hands.
For two people with cabin bags arriving in daylight, the rank taxi at a fixed €47 is a perfectly good answer and there is no reason to pretend otherwise. Ask the driver to drop you at the promenade end rather than on the main road – La Cala's centre is compact, and the right drop-off saves dragging luggage the last couple of hundred metres.
