Is renting a car worth it if we are based in Málaga city?

Week in Málaga city in September. We would like to see Ronda, maybe Antequera, and get to a few beaches along the coast. Is hiring a car for the week worth it, or is it more hassle than it is worth with parking in the old town?

For a base in Málaga city, I would not hire a car for the whole week. The old town is pedestrianised, hotel parking runs €20 to €30 a night, and you would be paying for a car that sits in a garage on the days you are exploring the city or on the beach. What works better is train and coach for the big trips – Ronda and Antequera are both reachable that way – and then hire a car for just two or three days if you want to string beaches and white villages together at your own pace. Pick it up at a city office rather than the airport to skip a trip back out there, and build in that Spanish town centres often have a low-emission zone you need to avoid driving into. If your plans lean more towards inland villages and quiet coves than the main sights, that flips and a full-week hire makes sense. Our Málaga car rental guide covers the costs and the parking reality. Which days were you thinking of driving?
