In Spain, a blanket ban on children runs into age-discrimination law, so most hotels work around it by being adults recommended: no kids' club, no children's entertainment, no family rooms, no cots. In practice the result is identical – you will not share the pool with a toddler. On paper, nothing stops a family booking a double room.

The best all-round adults-only base on the coast, and the one to book if you want a beach week with atmosphere. It sits directly on the sand with zero metres between the pool terrace and the beach, and the rooftop Amàre Club infinity pool runs DJ sets from midday. Hotel Riu Palace Nautilus

The strictest policy on this list – 18+, no exceptions – and the strongest value on it. Riu Palace Nautilus sits 10 metres from the Torremolinos promenade with an infinity pool, an indoor pool and sea views from most rooms.

Higuerón Hotel Málaga

The luxury pick, on a hillside at the Fuengirola and Benalmádena border, where the cliff-top infinity pools look straight down the Mediterranean. The spa runs to 2,500m² and the Sollo restaurant holds a Michelin star. Booking.com lists it as recommended for guests over 16 rather than a written ban, so treat it as adults-recommended.

Nobu Hotel Marbella

The most design-led hotel here and the only one where dinner is a genuine reason to book. On the Golden Mile within the Puente Romano complex, it is strictly 16+ with no children anywhere on the property, including the pool and the restaurant – one of the clearest policies on this list.

Guests get priority access to the Nobu restaurant and use of a dedicated adults-only pool, with a Six Senses spa on site and Cipriani and COYA a short walk away. Soho Boutique Castillo de Santa Catalina

The most unusual address on the coast: a restored 1932 castle in Málaga's El Limonar neighbourhood, with panoramic bay views and a maximum of 20 rooms. The quiet is something no beach resort can match. The pool is small, and that is not the point.

Hotel Ritual Torremolinos

Torremolinos has been an LGBTQ+ destination for decades and Ritual is its best-known hotel: a clothing-optional rooftop infinity pool, a well-used sauna and hammam, and the beach 150m away via a private lift. It is strictly adults-only.

Exe Estepona Thalasso & Spa

The most wellness-focused property on the list, and strictly 16+. The thalassotherapy centre uses actual seawater for its thermal pools and pressure-jet circuits rather than heated tap water with salt added, which is the distinction that matters if thalasso is why you are booking.

Senator Banús Spa Hotel

Strictly adults-only, five-star, and priced well below Marbella for the same category. It sits on the New Golden Mile between Estepona and Puerto Banús, with two outdoor pools, one of them saltwater, and a spa and solarium among the largest on the coast. The beach is 500m away rather than at the door.

Hard Rock Hotel Marbella

Formerly the H10 Andalucía Plaza, rebranded and repositioned considerably louder. The Sun Society rooftop pool runs events most summer weekends and the Rock Spa covers a full thermal circuit, with Puerto Banús marina a five-minute walk. It is adults-recommended at 16+.

MB Boutique Hotel, Nerja

The smallest property here, under 25 rooms, 200m from Torrecilla beach and a short walk from the Balcón de Europa. There is no pool, a real drawback in August, though the rooftop terrace carries two large hot tubs. It is adults-recommended from age 13.

Hotel Benalma Costa del Sol

Formerly Palladium Hotel Costa del Sol, rebranded but unchanged where it counts: direct beach access at 20 metres, an infinity pool over the sea and sea views from nearly every room. Adults-recommended rather than strictly adults-only.

The label is the only thing worth arguing about

Work through all eleven and one distinction outranks price, location and score combined. Six of them – Amàre, Riu Palace Nautilus, Nobu, Exe Estepona, Ritual and Senator Banús – put a minimum age in the booking conditions. The remaining five, Hard Rock, Higuerón, Soho Boutique Castillo, MB Boutique and Hotel Benalma, are child-free in every review you will read, but not by policy.

That gap almost never bites. When it does, it bites on exactly the week you were most looking forward to.
