Antequera is where most Costa del Sol visitors take their first balloon flight. It is the closest launch to the coast – 45 minutes from Málaga, under an hour from Marbella – and the setting is among the best in Spain: El Torcal's limestone towers to the south, the Vega plain below, Sierra Nevada on clear days. Flights launch at dawn, last about an hour and finish with Cava and breakfast in a field.

What to Expect
The meeting point is on the outskirts of Antequera, easy to reach by car from the coast. You arrive before dawn and help inflate the balloon – the inflation itself is part of the experience, with the burner lighting up the envelope as darkness lifts.
The flight: once airborne, you rise to a height that depends on the day's winds – typically 300–600 metres above the plain. Below you is the Vega de Antequera, one of Spain's most fertile plains, with the white walls of Antequera and the silhouette of La Peña de los Enamorados (the Lovers' Rock) visible from most altitudes.
On clear mornings the limestone towers of El Torcal are visible to the south. The flight lasts approximately one hour.
Landing: the balloon descends gently into a field. The ground crew follows by vehicle. After landing comes the traditional celebration: Cava (or juice) toasted with the pilot, followed by a typical Andalucian breakfast.
Certificate: each passenger receives a personalised flight certificate. A professional video of the experience is sent a few days after the flight.
Getting to Antequera from the Costa del Sol
From Málaga: 45 minutes by car via the A-45. No direct public transport to the launch site – a hire car or taxi is required.
From Marbella: approximately 1 hour via the A-357 and A-45. Worth combining with a visit to El Torcal de Antequera on the same day – the landscape you flew over, explored on foot.
From Torremolinos / Fuengirola / Benalmádena: 45–50 minutes by car.
The operator provides the exact meeting point 24 hours before the flight – confirm you have transport to reach it before booking.
When to Go
Best months: March–June and September–November. Calm mornings, stable air and the landscape at its greenest. Spring (March–May) is particularly good – the Vega is in flower and visibility is highest.
Avoid: July–August. Thermal activity builds quickly after dawn in summer, which limits flying windows. Winds are also less predictable. December–February has the highest cancellation rate due to fog and winter weather over the plain.
In practice the weather makes this call for you. Keep a spare morning in the trip and the flight becomes a highlight; pin it to your only free day and a cancellation can sink it. Book it early in the stay so a reschedule still fits. It slots into any list of day trips from Málaga.
