Nerja sits 65–70 km east of Málaga Airport, and east is the point – the opposite direction to Marbella, Estepona and the rest of the resort strip. The road is the A-7 coastal route, toll-free the whole way, and the drive takes about 50 minutes in normal traffic. A July afternoon stretches that to 60–75.
The complication is the fare. Nerja is not on the airport rank's fixed-price list, so an airport taxi runs on the meter for the full 65 km instead of quoting a set price. Nerja's own taxi firms publish fixed quotes of around €80 by day and €90 at night for up to four people, and that band is the realistic one.
What are the options, and what do they cost?

Everything ground-side leaves Terminal 3. The taxi rank, the Alsa stop and the car-hire desks are all a few minutes from arrivals, so no option costs you a shuttle first.
The coach is cheaper than a car at every group size, and it is worth saying plainly: four people at €8 each pay €32 against roughly €85 for one taxi. What the car buys is 55 minutes, a boot for the luggage, and a drop at your door rather than at the bus station.
How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Nerja?
There is no fixed fare, and that is unusual on this coast. Marbella, Estepona and the western resorts all sit on the fixed-price list carried in every licensed taxi, each with a set fare. Nerja does not, so the meter runs from the rank for the whole 65–70 km on the toll-free A-7.

Time of day moves the number more than traffic does. Málaga's tariff steps up for nights, weekends and public holidays, and a 65 km run is long enough for that band to be worth €10 or more. A Tuesday lunchtime arrival and a Saturday midnight arrival are not the same journey on the meter.
Is there a direct bus from Málaga Airport to Nerja?
Yes, and it is the cheapest way there by a wide margin. Alsa runs a direct coach from the airport stop to Nerja bus station, calling at Torre del Mar, from about €6 and typically €6–€10 per person, in about 1h 15m to 1h 45m depending on stops. Alsa lists the airport among its Málaga-side stations on this route, so there is no detour into the city.
The weakness is frequency rather than price. Direct departures are thin – listings put them at somewhere between one and four a day depending on the season – so check Alsa's own timetable against your landing time instead of assuming. Miss the last one and the fallback is a bus into Málaga bus station plus a second ticket east, adding 30–60 minutes.
Nerja bus station sits on Avenida de Pescia, a few minutes above the old town. That is fine for a centre hotel, less fine for the beach zones below or the residential streets east towards Maro.
The coach also calls at Torre del Mar on the way, which is the stop to know if you are staying anywhere along the Axarquía coast rather than in Nerja itself. It is a scheduled stop on the same ticket, not a change.
Nerja is also worth naming precisely when you book or when you get in the car. The town splits into three areas that need different approach roads – the old town around the Balcón de Europa, the beach zones below it at Burriana and Calahonda, and the residential streets running east towards Maro. "Nerja" on its own leaves the last five minutes to guesswork; a street address does not.
Why there is no train to Nerja
No railway reaches Nerja, and none is under construction. The Cercanías C1 line runs west from Málaga to Fuengirola, and nothing runs east along this stretch of coast at all.
The nearest rail is Málaga city itself. Getting there from the airport and continuing by bus takes 2.5 to 3 hours – slower and dearer than the direct coach you could have boarded at the terminal.
Should you hire a car instead?
Nerja repays a car more than the resort towns west of the airport do. The A-7 east is toll-free, the Nerja Caves and the Maro cliffs are a short drive on, and the Axarquía villages behind the coast are awkward to reach any other way. Rates start around €25 a day.
Parking is the trade-off. The old town streets around the Balcón de Europa are narrow and largely restricted, and the paid car parks fill through July and August. Should you pre-book a private transfer?
The case here is stronger than on the short runs west, and it rests on the missing fare table. Everywhere else on this coast you can look up what a taxi ought to cost. On this route you cannot, so booking ahead is how an unknown meter becomes a number you agreed at home.
The rest is arrival-day logistics. A driver tracking your flight number is there for a two-hour delay as readily as an on-time landing, and the price you agreed is the price regardless of what the meter would have done at midnight on a Saturday.
