When should you come to Nerja? Short version: May–June or September–October. Here's why. It's warm and dry from late spring to autumn, mild through a short winter, and hot and heaving in August. The shoulder months hit the sweet spot – warm sea, long days, none of the peak crush. Below it's the weather month by month, the sea temperatures and the festivals worth planning around. The Short Answer

If you want warm sea and good weather without the peak-summer crush, come in late May to June or September to early October. The sea is swimmable, the days are long, prices are lower than August and the beaches and caves are far less crowded.

Come in July and August only if you want the hottest weather and the liveliest atmosphere, and book well ahead – it is the busiest and priciest stretch. Come in winter for a quiet, mild, cheap trip where you walk the town and the coast rather than swim.

Weather Month by Month

SeasonHigh tempSeaRainFeel
Spring (Mar–May)18–23°C16–18°CLowGreen, quiet, warming up
Summer (Jun–Aug)24–27.5°C20–24°CVery dryHot, busy, peak
Autumn (Sep–Oct)23–26°C23–24°CLowWarm sea, sweet spot
Winter (Nov–Feb)13–18°C15–16°CWettest (Dec)Mild, quiet, cheap

Nerja's climate is classic Mediterranean: short, hot, dry summers and long, mild winters. Rainfall is low across the year and concentrated in the cooler months, so a summer trip is almost guaranteed dry.

Summer (July–August)

The hottest and busiest time. Highs reach around 27°C, the sea is at its warmest near 24°C, and it barely rains. It is the best stretch for swimming and beach days, but Burriana and the caves are packed, parking is tight, and hotels are at their priciest – book months ahead.

If you come in peak summer, work around the heat: beach or water early, shade or indoors in the early afternoon, and out again in the evening when the town comes alive.

Spring & Autumn – the Sweet Spot

May, June, September and early October are the best months to visit for most people. Daytime temperatures sit in the low-to-mid 20s, the sea is warm enough to swim – warmest of all in September, after a summer of heating up – and the crowds and prices drop off either side of peak season.

This is also the best window for the active side of Nerja – kayaking the Maro cliffs, walking, day trips – when it is warm but not punishing. See the Nerja kayak guide for the standout half-day.

Winter (November–February)

Winter is mild rather than cold – highs around 13–18°C, plenty of bright days, and the occasional spell of rain, with December the wettest month. The sea drops to about 15°C, so swimming is for the hardy only.

It is the quietest and cheapest time to come, and a good one if you want to walk the old town, the Balcón and the coast without crowds. For where to base yourself any time of year, see the where to stay in Nerja guide.

Festivals Worth Timing

Nerja's calendar is worth planning around if your dates are flexible:

  • Semana Santa (Easter) – processions through the old town in the run-up to Easter
  • San Juan (23–24 June) – beach bonfires and midnight swims for the summer solstice
  • Virgen del Carmen (16 July) – the fishermen's patron carried out to sea by boat, watched from Torrecilla and El Salón beaches
  • Nerja Caves Festival (mid-July) – concerts staged inside the Cuevas de Nerja
  • Nerja Feria (mid-October) – the biggest party of the year, east of the Balcón between Carabeo and Los Huertos
  • Christmas to Three Kings (to 6 January) – lights, markets and the Kings' parade
When to come
Choose this if...
Come in May–June or September–October for the best balance of warm sea, good weather and manageable crowds. Choose July–August for the hottest weather and liveliest atmosphere if you book ahead, and winter for a quiet, mild, low-cost trip built around walking rather than swimming.
Avoid this if...
Avoid August if you dislike heat and crowds or are travelling on a budget – it is the busiest and priciest month. And do not plan a beach-and-swim holiday for December to February; the weather is pleasant but the sea is cold at around 15°C.
