Where to Stay in Nerja
Pick the right area in Nerja and the trip sorts itself out. Pick wrong and you're trekking 20 minutes to dinner every night. It's less about price than how you want to spend your days: clifftop old town for first-timers, Burriana for families, the quiet eastern coves for couples, the western seafront for a calm beach base. There's no train and the centre is small, so almost everywhere is walkable once you land. Here's how to choose – and what to do once you've chosen, in our things to do in Nerja guide.

Old Town & Balcón de Europa
The old town is the obvious choice for a first visit. It wraps around the Balcón de Europa viewpoint, with the restaurants, tapas bars, shops and several small beaches all within a few minutes on foot. It is the liveliest part of Nerja in the evenings and the easiest base if you do not have a car.
The trade-off is price and footfall – central hotels command the highest rates and the streets around the Balcón are busy through the day in season.
Hotel Balcón de Europa ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The single best location in Nerja, built into the rock of the Balcón itself with direct access to Caletilla beach, an infinity pool and sea-view restaurants. If being right in the thick of it with the beach on your doorstep matters most, nothing else is this close.
Hotel Plaza Cavana ⭐⭐⭐
A few steps from the Balcón, this is the strong-value central pick – a rooftop pool, spacious rooms and the same walkable location for noticeably less than the seafront hotels. Children are welcome, which makes it a practical central base for families.
Carabeo & Calahonda
Just east of the Balcón, the Carabeo and Calahonda coves are the quieter, more characterful side of central Nerja. You are still within walking distance of the old town, but the atmosphere is calmer and several places have direct sea views over the smaller beaches. It is the sweet spot for couples who want central convenience without the full bustle of the Balcón.
The trade-off is the terrain – the coves sit below the town, so expect steps down to the sand and back up again.
Hotel Carabeo
A small boutique hotel facing the sea on the quiet Carabeo side, a few steps from Calahonda beach and a short walk from the old town. Garden, terrace and a seasonal pool – the kind of calm, characterful base couples tend to rebook.
Burriana Beach
Burriana is the best beach in Nerja and the natural choice for families and beach-first trips – a long stretch of Blue Flag sand with water sports, kayak hire, sunbeds and beach bars including the famous open-fire paella at Ayo's. For the full rundown of the beach itself, see our Nerja beaches guide.
The one downside is distance: Burriana is a 15–20 minute walk or a short drive from the old town, so it is less convenient if you want to wander into the centre each evening.
Hotel Paraíso del Mar
A restored villa with direct access to Burriana beach, gardens, an outdoor pool, hot tubs and a sauna, about a 10-minute walk from the old town. A comfortable, well-placed base for a beach-focused stay on the best stretch of sand in Nerja.
The Parador de Nerja is closed until 2027
Torrecilla & the Western Seafront
West of the centre, around Torrecilla beach, is an easy-going seafront area that still keeps the old town within a walkable distance. It suits travellers who want the beach close and a calmer setting than the Balcón, without giving up the option of strolling into the centre.
Hotel Perla Marina ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A four-star seafront hotel on the western side with sea views, a pool and the Balcón de Europa under 15 minutes away on foot. A solid all-round base that balances beach access with an easy walk into town.
Maro – the Quietest Option
Maro is the tiny whitewashed village 4 km east, beside the caves and the protected Maro cliffs. It is the quietest base around Nerja by some distance – a handful of small guesthouses and holiday rentals rather than hotels, surrounded by countryside and a short walk from one of the best snorkelling beaches on the coast.
It suits couples and walkers who want calm and scenery over nightlife and convenience. You will want a car: the village is small, and getting into Nerja means a short drive or the local bus.
Apartments & Self-Catering
For families and longer stays, self-catering often beats a hotel room. The standout option is Capistrano Playa, a village-style apartment complex on the hillside above Burriana beach, built around gardens, pools and a children's splash pool – about 15 minutes' walk into town and 5 minutes to the beach.
Apartments across the old town and the seafront are also widely available and practical for a week or more, with kitchen space and room to spread out.
