Sunset Cruises

The sunset catamaran cruise is the most popular non-dolphin boat trip from Fuengirola. It departs from Puerto Deportivo and includes a complimentary drink. The catamaran format gives you deck space to move around and a clear view of the coastline as the sun drops toward the horizon.

Exact departure times for sunset cruises were not confirmed from a single official source – times shift through the season as the sunset moves. In June and July, sunset is around 21:30. In September it falls closer to 20:30. Check the current departure time when booking rather than assuming a fixed slot.

Some operators run what is locally known as a booze cruise – an evening trip with a drinks package rather than a single complimentary drink. These are typically louder and more social than the standard sunset cruise. If you want a quieter experience, check what is included before booking.

Take note
Book the sunset cruise at least 2–3 days ahead in July and August. Evening slots are the most popular departure on the marina and fill quickly in peak season.

Dolphin Watching

Dolphin watching trips depart from the same marina as all other boat trips. Common, striped and bottlenose dolphins are regularly sighted. Trips run twice daily and last 2 hours.

This is covered in full in our Fuengirola dolphin watching guide – including departure times, pricing, species information and what to expect.

Fuengirola to Benalmádena by Boat

Costasol Cruceros runs a coastal ferry service between Fuengirola and Benalmádena. The trip takes around 1 hour each way and follows the Costa del Sol coastline – a straightforward way to see the coast from the water without booking a dedicated excursion.

Schedule:

  • April–October: daily departures
  • November–March: reduced days and frequency

The boat used on this route is the Golondrina StarFish Dos. It is the most accessible boat trip from Fuengirola for visitors who want a coastal cruise without the dolphin-watching focus or a sunset time slot.

Combining with Benalmádena

The ferry makes a natural half-day – take the boat one way and return by C1 train. Benalmádena station is a short walk from the marina there. See our Benalmádena things to do guide for what to do at the other end.

Fishing Trips

Fuengirola has some of the best-verified fishing trips on the Costa del Sol. Two confirmed operators run from the marina: Eventos Náuticos (Port Ticket Office, local 38) and Monarca Nautica.

Confirmed details:

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Hours: 09:00–13:00
  • Season: March–November
  • Price: €60–75 per person
  • Equipment and refreshments included

The trip is recreational sea fishing rather than deep-sea sport fishing, though charter options for sport fishing are also available from the marina. The March–November season covers the best weather window and aligns with the most active fishing months in this stretch of the Mediterranean.

Pro tip
The €60–75 price includes all equipment – you do not need to bring anything beyond sun protection and appropriate clothing. Arrive at local 38, Puerto Deportivo, 10 minutes before the 09:00 departure.

Private Boat Hire & Charters

Private yacht and boat charters depart from Puerto Deportivo for groups who want flexibility over timing, route and company. The confirmed maximum capacity is 12 people on the private yacht product.

Some operators offer boat hire without a licence – a self-drive option for smaller vessels on calmer coastal waters. These products typically come with a weather guarantee and a refund or reschedule policy if conditions are poor.

Private charters are significantly more expensive than shared trips. Exact per-hour or half-day pricing was not confirmed from a single official source at time of writing – request quotes directly from marina operators or compare options via booking platforms.

This category also includes the "fuengirola boat hire" searches – if you want to drive yourself rather than join a guided trip, ask at the marina offices about self-drive options.

Practical Information

Booking: Advance booking is effectively required for most timed products, particularly sunset cruises and private charters in July and August. Walk-up availability exists for some trips in shoulder season but is not reliable.

Bad weather policy: Most operators offer a rescheduled date or full refund if a trip is cancelled due to adverse weather. Confirm the specific policy when booking – it varies by operator and platform.

Children: Public sightseeing boats and the Benalmádena ferry are generally family-friendly. Private yacht tours explicitly accept families. Minimum age policies are product-dependent – confirm with the operator before booking with young children.

Seasickness: The Costa del Sol coast is relatively sheltered but open-sea conditions vary. Morning departures typically have calmer water than afternoon. If you or your group is sensitive to motion, the Benalmádena ferry or a morning dolphin trip is a safer choice than an afternoon private charter when wind is up.

What to bring: Sun protection, a light layer for the return (cooler once moving), and any personal medication including seasickness tablets if needed. Snacks and drinks are provided on most trips.

Finding the Marina

All Fuengirola boat trips depart from Puerto Deportivo Fuengirola. The main departure area is around muelle 3 – look for operator signage near the dock numbers. The marina office area includes a Port Ticket Office at local 38 where fishing trips and some other excursions can be booked directly.

The marina is at the western end of the seafront, adjacent to the old town. From Fuengirola train station it is around 10 minutes on foot heading west along the promenade.

For getting to Fuengirola from Málaga Airport, the C1 Cercanías train takes 34 minutes and costs €2.70. See the Málaga Airport to Fuengirola transfer guide for full options.

Which boat trip is right for you?
Choose this if...
Choose the sunset cruise if you want a relaxed 1.5–2 hour experience with a drink included and views of the coastline at the best time of day. Choose fishing if you want something active and different – 4 hours, all equipment included, €60–75. Choose the Benalmádena ferry if you want a coastal cruise without a fixed activity agenda.
Avoid this if...
Avoid booking a boat trip without checking the weather forecast first – even on the Costa del Sol, choppy conditions can affect shorter trips significantly. Also avoid assuming walk-up availability in July and August – popular evening slots can be fully booked days in advance.

Back on dry land, the Fuengirola guide rounds up the old town, the beaches and where to eat afterwards.
