Malaga Airport to City Centre: €1.80 Train vs €25 Taxi (2026)
Jump to: Quick Comparison · Train C1 · Airport Bus · Taxi & Uber · Car Hire · Which Stop? · Step-by-Step · Tips · FAQ
Eight kilometres. That's the distance from Malaga Airport to the city centre. In most European cities it would cost you €15–20 in a taxi without thinking twice. In Malaga, the train covers it in 12 minutes for €1.80 — and it leaves from right outside the arrivals hall.
Most first-time visitors don't know this. They walk out of Terminal 3, see the taxi rank, and spend €25 getting to their hotel. On the way back, they do it again. That's €50 on two journeys that would have cost €3.60 combined.
This guide covers every realistic option — prices verified for 2026 after Malaga's January fare update, timetables confirmed, and a straight answer on which option is actually right for your situation.

🚆 Train C1: Fastest and Cheapest
The Renfe Cercanías C1 is the right choice for the vast majority of people landing at Malaga Airport. It's modern, air-conditioned, runs every 20 minutes through most of the day, and gets you to the city centre faster than a taxi during peak hours when traffic backs up on the N-340.
Price: €1.80 single (Zone 1–2). Return: €3.60.
Journey time: 8 minutes to Málaga María Zambrano (the main train station). 12 minutes to Málaga Centro-Alameda (the final stop, closest to the historic centre).
Frequency: Every 20 minutes during daytime. Every 30 minutes on early morning and late evening services.
Operating hours from the airport: First departure: 06:44. Last departure: 00:24 (just after midnight). If you land after 00:30, you'll need a taxi or night bus — the next train isn't until 06:44.
How to buy: Ticket machines in the station (card and cash accepted). Or tap your contactless bank card or phone directly at the Cronos barriers — no ticket needed. If using contactless Cronos, you must tap OUT at your destination too, or Renfe charges the maximum zone fare automatically.
Finding the station: Exit Terminal 3 arrivals through the main doors on the ground floor. Follow the open-air walkway — about 2–3 minutes on foot. From the Departures level (P1) there's a covered walkway that takes 5–7 minutes. Follow "RENFE / Train" signs throughout.
The Sobretasa trap: At the ticket machines, avoid pressing "Sobretasa" — it adds a supplement and airport staff report that many tourists accidentally press it and pay €7–8 instead of €1.80. Select your destination zone directly.
🗺️ Which Train Stop: María Zambrano or Centro-Alameda?
This trips people up. The train makes two stops in Malaga city — get off at the right one.
Málaga María Zambrano (8 minutes from airport): The main intercity hub. Get off here if you're connecting to a high-speed AVE train to Madrid, Seville, or Barcelona, or if your hotel is in the western part of the city near the train station. The bus station is adjacent for coaches along the Costa del Sol.
Málaga Centro-Alameda (12 minutes from airport): The final stop and closest to the tourist areas. Get off here for the historic centre (Calle Larios is a 10-minute walk), the Alcazaba, the Cathedral, the port, and most hotels in the old town and Soho district. This is where the majority of visitors should alight.
If you're unsure, always ride to Centro-Alameda. You can always walk or take a short bus ride from there. Walking back from María Zambrano to the historic centre takes 20 minutes and isn't signposted for tourists.
🚌 Airport Express Bus (Line A): More Central Drops
The EMT Airport Express runs from Terminal 3 directly to the city centre with stops that the train doesn't cover: the bus station, Avenida de Andalucía, and Paseo del Parque — the latter being directly next to the Alcazaba and the port area.
Price: €4.00 (cash or card on board). Note: CTMAM Travel Card accepted at the €4.00 airport express fare, but no transfers are permitted on this route in either direction.
Journey time: 25–35 minutes (traffic dependent — can stretch to 45 minutes in summer peak hours).
Operating hours: 07:00 to midnight, every 20–30 minutes. No early morning service — if you have a pre-dawn departure, the train is your only public transport option (first train to airport leaves Centro-Alameda at 05:20).
Bus stop location: Directly outside Terminal 3 arrivals, ground floor. Clearly signed.
🚖 Taxi, Uber & Bolt: Door to Door
Official taxis (white cars, blue stripe) depart from the rank immediately outside Terminal 3 arrivals. Available 24 hours. Fares are metered with a mandatory €5.50 airport surcharge on top.
2026 fares (updated January 1 per Malaga City Council):
Daytime Rate 1 (Monday–Friday, 06:00–22:00): expect €20–25 to the city centre including the airport surcharge. Night/weekend Rate 2 (22:00–06:00, all day Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays): expect €25–30. Semana Santa and August Feria: nighttime rates apply all day.
Extra charges to know: luggage over 60cm costs €0.45 per item. Groups over 4 passengers: €2.50 supplement. Night service (midnight–06:00): additional €2 surcharge.
Uber, Bolt and Cabify operate in Malaga and often undercut the taxi rank price by €5–8. Pickup is not at the main taxi rank — follow the app instructions for the designated pickup zones in the parking area. Surge pricing applies during high demand (late-night flights, festival periods). Not always available for airport pickups due to driver availability.
Never accept offers from drivers inside the terminal. Only use the official taxi rank outside or a verified app booking.
🚘 Car Hire: Only If You're Leaving the City
Malaga Airport hosts all major hire companies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Enterprise) and low-cost operators (Goldcar, Record Go, Centauro). Comparing across all of them before arriving consistently finds better rates.
Important: if Malaga city itself is your destination, don't hire a car. Parking in the historic centre costs €20–30 per day, the streets are narrow and largely pedestrianised, and public transport covers everything you need. A hire car earns its cost when you're doing day trips or continuing along the coast.
For day trips to Ronda, Nerja, the Axarquía villages, Caminito del Rey, or a road trip continuing to Granada or Seville — a car changes what's possible. See our day trips from Malaga guide for which destinations work best by train, bus, or car.
Step-by-Step: Train from Arrivals to City Centre
For first-timers, here's the exact process:
1. Exit Terminal 3 arrivals on the ground floor (P0). Follow the open-air walkway — it's about 2–3 minutes. The station entrance is clearly marked with RENFE signs. If it's raining, follow the covered route inside the terminal (slightly longer, about 5–7 minutes).
2. Buy your ticket or use contactless. At the machines: select your destination (Centro-Alameda for the old town, María Zambrano for train connections). Price: €1.80. Pay by card or cash. Avoid "Sobretasa." Alternatively, tap your contactless bank card or phone directly at the barrier — tap in here, tap out at your destination.
3. Take any train on the platform. All trains stop at both María Zambrano and Centro-Alameda. Direction: "Málaga Centro-Alameda / Fuengirola." Announcements are in Spanish and English.
4. Get off at Centro-Alameda (final stop, 12 minutes). From here, the historic centre is a 10-minute walk along the Alameda Principal boulevard. The port is 15 minutes. Most hotels in the old town and Soho district are walkable.
5. If you used contactless: tap your card at the exit barrier at your destination. Don't forget — Renfe charges the maximum zone fare if you don't tap out.
Local Tips
Don't exchange currency at the airport. Rates at airport bureaux de change are consistently poor. ATMs in the city (use your bank's network, not the standalone Euronet machines) give standard rates. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Malaga.
Old Town pedestrian zones. Even taxis can't go door-to-door to many hotels in the historic centre — the streets are pedestrianised. The taxi or bus drops you at the edge of the zone, and you walk 2–5 minutes to your hotel. This is true for all options, not a disadvantage of public transport.
Luggage on trains and buses. No extra charge and no size restrictions on either the C1 train or the Airport Express bus. Overhead racks on the train, space near the doors on the bus.
Pre-booked private transfers. If you want door-to-door comfort at a fixed price (particularly useful for early morning or late night when you just want to arrive without stress), private transfers can be booked in advance and often cost less than an on-demand taxi because there's no airport surcharge uncertainty. Worth comparing if you have 4+ people.
Travelling to the Costa del Sol towns? The C1 train continues from the airport all the way to Fuengirola (34 minutes, ~€2.70), stopping at Torremolinos and Benalmádena along the way. Far cheaper than a taxi and no traffic. See our public transport in Malaga guide for full fares and the CTMAM card that covers metro and buses too.
FAQ
How much does the train from Malaga Airport to city centre cost? €1.80 for a single ticket (Zone 1–2) to either María Zambrano or Centro-Alameda. Return ticket is €3.60. You can also tap directly with a contactless bank card or phone at the Renfe Cronos barriers — same price, no ticket needed, but remember to tap out at your destination.
How long does the train take from Malaga Airport? 8 minutes to Málaga María Zambrano (main station, AVE connections). 12 minutes to Málaga Centro-Alameda (historic centre, old town, port area). It's the fastest option to the city centre — taxis take 20 minutes in light traffic and longer when the N-340 is busy.
What time is the last train from Malaga Airport? The last train from the airport departs at approximately 00:24 (just after midnight). The first train is at 06:44. If you land between 00:30 and 06:44, you'll need a taxi or the night bus service — there are no trains during this window.
How much is a taxi from Malaga Airport to the city centre? Expect €20–25 during the day (Monday–Friday, 06:00–22:00) and €25–30 at night, on weekends, and public holidays, including the mandatory €5.50 airport surcharge. Fares were updated in January 2026 following the official Malaga City Council tariff revision. Uber and Bolt typically run €5–8 cheaper, but pickup is from designated app zones rather than the main taxi rank.
Is there a direct bus from Malaga Airport to the city centre? Yes — the EMT Airport Express (Line A) runs from €4.00, every 20–30 minutes, 07:00 to midnight. Journey time is 25–35 minutes depending on traffic. Key stops include the bus station, María Zambrano, and Paseo del Parque (closest bus stop to the Alcazaba and port). For speed and price, the train is better; for a central drop without walking from the station, the bus has advantages.
Can I use the Renfe train to get to Torremolinos or Fuengirola from the airport? Yes — the C1 line continues from the airport through Torremolinos (10 minutes, ~€1.80) and Benalmádena (18 minutes, ~€2.05) all the way to Fuengirola (34 minutes, ~€2.70). It's the cheapest and most reliable way to reach these towns from the airport.
Where exactly is the train station at Malaga Airport? Underground, directly outside Terminal 3. From the arrivals hall (ground floor, P0): exit through the main doors and follow the open-air walkway for 2–3 minutes. Follow RENFE signs throughout — they're present but use neutral colours and are easy to miss if you're not looking. The station is staffed during peak hours.
