A spa hotel should mean more than a gym and a hot tub. The five below run genuine thermal circuits – hydrotherapy pools, saunas, hammams and water-based treatments – and four of them sell day passes to non-guests, so you do not need a room to use them. That last point is where most guides stop, and it is where the interesting decision starts.
A circuit pass for two people costs about the same as a discounted room night in low season, and hotel guests usually get circuit access bundled in. Day pass or overnight: which actually costs less?
Day passes are bought from the spa itself, usually online a day or three ahead. Room rates are a separate market, and in the quieter months they move a long way below their summer level while day-pass prices barely shift at all.

That last row is the one people get wrong. Non-guest access runs on timed slots that sell out at weekends and through summer, while guests walk in on their own schedule – so on a busy date the room buys you availability as much as it buys you a bed.

Gran Hotel Miramar, Botanic Spa by Sisley
The best spa in Malaga itself and the most convenient by a distance. The Botanic Spa by Sisley runs a full circuit – heated sensation pool, Finnish sauna, hammam, ice fountain and jacuzzi – with treatment rooms using Sisley products, inside a restored 1926 palace hotel a short walk from La Malagueta beach.
The circuit is open to non-guests on pre-booked slots, with single treatments priced separately. It is the only central option at this standard, and for a spa morning folded into a city break rather than a trip of its own, nothing else in Malaga competes. Hydros Spa, Holiday World
The best standalone thermal circuit near Malaga, designed as a day spa rather than a hotel amenity, and open to non-guests as standard – which is why it is the pick if you want a proper circuit without booking a room at all. It sits within the Holiday World complex in Benalmádena, about 20–25 minutes from the city.
The circuit runs to five pools, including a Dead Sea-style saltwater pool, a counter-current pool and hydromassage beds, all with sea views, plus three contrast showers with aromatherapy and a chromotherapy relaxation room. Two details matter before you go: it is adults-only from 16, and it runs split hours, roughly 10:00–14:00 and 15:00–19:00 daily, so an afternoon arrival needs checking against that break.

Higuerón Hotel Málaga
A modern resort hotel, part of Hilton's Curio Collection, built around its spa on the hillside above Fuengirola. The spa runs an indoor heated pool, hydrotherapy jets and waterfalls, a whirlpool, sauna and Turkish bath, with a full treatment menu, at a scale the city hotels cannot match.
Day passes are sold on timed slots for non-guests and should be booked ahead. Note that the hotel is recommended for guests over 16, so this is not the choice for a family spa afternoon. Elba Estepona Thalasso
The most ambitious water facility on the Costa del Sol, and the only one here doing genuine thalassotherapy: a hydrotherapy circuit using real Mediterranean seawater rather than heated fresh water with salt added. Expect thermal pools, a sea-water circuit, hot tub, sauna, an igloo and seawater massages and wraps, in a beachfront hotel about 45–50 minutes from Malaga.
It is worth the drive if thalasso specifically is the point. Two caveats: peak periods are sometimes reserved for hotel guests, so confirm non-guest access before travelling, and guest reviews are mixed on the condition of some areas of the property even while praising the spa and the beachfront. Hotel MS Maestranza
A compact top-floor spa near the bullring and the Paseo Marítimo, 100 metres from Malagueta beach, with a terrace pool, hydromassage jets, sauna, Turkish bath and a relaxation area with sea views.
The important distinction: the relaxation area with sauna, hot tub and Turkish bath is free for hotel guests, and massages are charged separately, with day-spa access for non-guests limited and seasonal. What to know before you book a circuit
Circuits have rules that catch first-timers, and turning up without the right kit means paying at reception for it.
- A swimming cap is required at most circuits. Some sell them at reception, most do not lend them.
- Bring swimwear and flip-flops. Towels and robes are usually provided or rented for a small fee.
- Book the treatment and the circuit in one reservation. Combination packages consistently beat à la carte pricing.
- Reserve one to three days ahead in summer and at weekends – non-guest slots are capped and they do sell out.
- Allow 90 minutes for a full circuit, and arrive 10–15 minutes early if a treatment follows it.
