Mijas vs Nerja: Only One of Them Is Somewhere You Can Have a Holiday

Both places turn up on the same lists under the same heading, and the comparison people usually want is the wrong one. Nerja is a town of 22,132 people with 13 beaches and coves and a cave system. Mijas Pueblo is a village of 3,524 with no beach at all. One is somewhere you base a week; the other is somewhere you spend a morning.

The second thing to settle early: they are not near each other. Nerja sits on the eastern side of Málaga and Mijas on the western, roughly 90km apart and about an hour to 1h15 in the car – so this is a choice between two holidays, not two stops on one.

They are not on the same stretch of coast

This trips people up more than the size difference does. Málaga city sits between them, and the two towns face away from each other along the coastline: Nerja is the scenic eastern end, 57km from Málaga, and Mijas is above the western resort strip.

Do not choose Mijas Pueblo as a beach base, because it does not have a beach – the nearest sand is Fuengirola's, and the Mijas Costa beaches are 19 minutes downhill. From the western coast – Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Marbella – Mijas Pueblo is a half-day that costs you almost nothing in travel, and Nerja is a full day out with a long drive at each end.
